Prayer Facilities
Andorra has no congregational mosque. Prayer space is arranged at the hotel, and prayer times are listed in the trip booklet. Halal options are limited; the group's tables are chosen with seafood and vegetarian choices, and we say plainly what is halal and what is not.
Andorra is what the Pyrenees look like when a border does not quite close: a country of 468 square kilometres wedged between Catalonia and France, independent since the Paréage of 1278 settled a dispute between a Spanish bishop and a French count by giving each of them half the sovereignty — an arrangement still in force, with the Bishop of Urgell and the President of France as co-princes. Catalan is the official language. The capital sits in a narrow valley with the Casa de la Vall, the sixteenth-century house that served as its parliament, in the old quarter. Beyond the town the country is valleys and villages: Ordino and Canillo with their Romanesque churches, the glacial valley of Madriu-Perafita-Claror on the UNESCO list, and high roads over passes in every direction. Its duty status has made it a shopping destination for generations, with the main avenues of the capital given over to it. For this journey it is also the geography lesson: the range that campaigns crossed and behind which no one settled for long.
